Message from Chair

Hello from the General Practice Mental Health Standards Collaboration (GPMHSC), and welcome to the summer edition of our newsletter. I hope you had a well-deserved break and were able to spend time with friends and family.

Changes to CPD for the 2023–25 triennium in effect now

The long-discussed changes from points to hours have now come into effect, with GPs now required to complete 50 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) as opposed to points. If you’re still not sure how everything works, there are some links later in this newsletter to help you.

Better Access Review

An evaluation of the Better Access initiative was undertaken in 2022 by the University of Melbourne. The final report has been made available, with 15 recommendations made to the Australian Government to ensure better outcomes and access to care for all Australians. You can read the report here.

Wonca 2023 submission

After the excitement and success that was RMA22 and GP22, the GPMHSC is finalising two WONCA23 submissions relating to trauma-informed care and FPS workshops. If all goes well, we hope to see you in Sydney at the end of the year!

For GPs

Urgent – Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) CPD requirements

Registered providers of FPS who have not yet completed their FPS CPD requirements and who have not spoken to the GPMHSC must contact them immediately, as the deadline for completing FPS CPD requirements has now closed.

CPD changes

We are now in the new triennium, and the CPD change from points to hours has come into effect.

Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) webinars coming soon

In 2022, the GPMHSC convened working groups for the culturally and linguistically diverse population, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, refugees, veterans and the LGBTQI+ community in order to update the current Mental Health Treatment Plan templates.

FPS subsidy available until June 2023

If you haven’t completed your FPS Skills Training (FPS ST) yet, 2023 is the time to do it as the $600 subsidy program is due to conclude on 30 June 2023.

A new online directory, connect·ed, has launched enabling GPs to search locally for credentialed mental health professionals who have the qualifications, skills and experience to treat eating disorders.

Mental health training standards 2023 - 25

The GPMHSC has officially released the Mental Health Standards 2023-25: A guide for general practitioners.

For Training Providers

Urgent: re-accreditation of skills training courses for the 2023–25 CPD triennium

If you have skills training courses that were accredited for the 2020–22 triennium, you need to apply for re-accreditation for the 2023–25 triennium. Until this is done, your courses are not available for GPs to enrol in via the RACGP dashboard.

The importance of Medicare Provider Numbers when reporting MHST

One of the most important parts of the mental health skills training (MHST) process is ensuring GP training is reported correctly.

Online training provider grants program

The GPMHSC has one more $10,000 grant to give to training providers to assist with the development and delivery of online and face-to-face Focussed Psychological Strategies skills training.

Meeting dates 2023

The GPMHSC Committee meeting dates are available on the GPMHSC website now. Don’t forget to review these, and to take note of the dates activity applications are due in order to make the next committee meeting.

Have you checked out the new standards for mental health training?

In October, the GPMHSC officially released the Mental health training standards for 2023–25: A guide for training providers.
