Message from the Chair

In the last few months, the GPMHSC has been busy promoting mental health education and accreditation at various general practice conferences. These have included the Primary Health Network (PHN) conference in Mackay, the General Practice Training and Education Conference in Adelaide, GP18 on the Gold Coast and Rural Medicine Australia 18 in Darwin. The GPMHSC will also exhibit at the General Practice Conference Exhibition (GPCE) in Melbourne on Friday to Sunday 16–18 November 2018.

The GPMHSC's new introductory video was promoted during World Mental Health Month in October. This provided us with the opportunity to connect to the broader community and highlight the importance we place on our role of supporting GPs in delivering high-quality mental health services.

As we move into the second half of the 2017–19 triennium, the GPMHSC is beginning work towards the review of the Mental Health Training Standards. The key to this review is the engagement of important stakeholders, including GPs and accredited training providers. The review will also include a comprehensive evaluation of existing educational frameworks to ensure that GPs continue to receive high-quality, evidence-based training in mental health. The new Mental Health Training Standards 2020–22 for GPs and training providers is anticipated for release late 2019. We will keep you updated on the latest developments during the review process.

As we head towards the end of another successful and productive year, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and healthy holiday season. The GPMHSC looks forward to working collaboratively with all our stakeholders in 2019.

Assoc Prof Morton Rawlin
Chair, GPMHSC
