Utilising consumer and carer representatives in your skills training activities

Consumers and carers are essential parts of skills training activities, as they provide GPs with a real-world perspective and can offer valuable insights into what works and what doesn't.

Including consumers and carers is mandatory in GPMHSC accredited skills training activities. Carers who are engaged to participate in your activities must specifically be unpaid carers. It is important to be aware that unpaid carers face challenges such as emotional, financial, and time-related burdens –consider this when seeking unpaid carers to be a part of your activity.

If you’re a training provider looking for consumers and carers to use in your activities, Mental Health Australia (MHA) may be able to assist. The MHA website provides representative profiles for current register members according to their home state and territory, and training providers can share information explaining the representative role, what is expected of the representative, and remuneration details.

For more information, please call the National Register secretariat on 02 6285 3100 or email MHA to discuss the process of identifying and engaging a suitable representative.
