Larter Consulting


GPs report that psychological factors are the most common reason for patient presentations, with female GPs seeing up to 78% of patients for psychological reasons, and 64% for male GPs. GPs are additionally reporting a lack of access to mental health specialists in many areas and lack of systemic support, according to the 2023 RACGP Health of the Nation report.
To combat this, primary health education and consulting firm Larter has announced they will be offering online Focussed Psychological Strategies Skills Training (FPS ST) for GPs. Larter’s FPS ST course will enhance GPs clinical skills in the FPS interventions and enable claiming higher MBS rebates for mental health consultations.
Focussed Psychological Strategies (FPS) refers to specific evidence-based mental health care psychological therapies. Under the Better Access initiative, GPs who are registered FPS providers can use a range of therapies that fall into the following categories:  
Larter’s FPS ST course is 20 hours in duration, comprising of pre and post activities, eight hours of online learning; and 12 hours of eLearning in Zoom workshops (4 x 3-hour sessions facilitated by a GP and a clinical psychologist). FPS ST course content additionally includes narrative therapy training.
Completion of the training package will allow GPs to claim MBS item numbers 2721, 2723, 2725 and 2727 for the provision of FPS.
