The GP role in providing care for people experiencing eating disorders
The prevalence of eating disorders has increased significantly over the last few years, and you may have noticed more patients presenting to you that you suspect may be experiencing an eating disorder.
As a GP, you are likely to be the first health professional a person with an eating disorder will engage with. You can contribute to better treatment outcomes through early identification and intervention in the primary care setting. You also have an important role in providing medical monitoring for people experiencing an eating disorder and may take on a treatment coordination role.
To support GPs to identify, assess and support someone experiencing an eating disorder, the National Eating Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) has developed Eating Disorder Core Skills: eLearning for GPs.
This interactive 4-hour evidence-based training will provide you with comprehensive foundational information on eating disorders and will help you to effectively identify and respond to people experiencing eating disorders. It covers the eating disorder MBS items, the importance of and roles within the multidisciplinary care team, and the stepped system of care for eating disorders. Resources are provided to support implementation in clinical practice.
