A carer’s perspective on grief and mental illness

By sharing personal experiences and interactive conversations with carers and consumers, GPs have a unique opportunity to consider ways that could improve the mental healthcare they deliver.

Toni is a parent of a young adult son living with a serious mental illness since his mid-teens. She explains in a piece she wrote that GPs often fail to fully appreciate the complexity of the emotional journey that families commonly experience. Toni also describes why carer grief is poorly understood by many GPs and how deep sense of loss can be central to the experience of a parent or other carer.
