Incorporating the consumer and carer perspective in mental health training

The involvement of consumers and carers in Mental Health Skills Training (MHST) and FPS Skills Training (ST) provides GPs with the opportunity to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the recovery journey, including common barriers faced by consumers and carers.

In 2017, the National Mental Health Commission (NMHC) initiated the Consumer and Carer Engagement and Participation Project. The objective of this project is to provide advice on ways to support people with mental health by safely and effectively participating in consumer and carer engagements. Lived experience comprises of personal stories and interactive conversations with consumers and carers, and allows GPs to consider strategies that could help improve mental health outcomes for their patients.

The GPMHSC accreditation process ensures that consumers and carers are included in all four stages of activity development - development, planning, delivery and review. You can read more about including consumers and carers in your educational activities here.
